What a liquidation is, and what it does.
What a liquidation is
A position on Hyperliquid stays open while its margin covers the loss. When the loss eats the margin down to the maintenance level, the exchange closes the position itself. That forced close is a liquidation.
It is measured on the mark price, which blends prices from large exchanges with Hyperliquid’s own book, so one odd trade does not trigger it. The exchange first sends the position to the order book. Positions above $100K go in steps of a fifth. What the book cannot take goes to the backstop, Hyperliquid’s liquidator vault.
Why it matters
A liquidated long is a forced sale, a liquidated short a forced purchase. Forced selling into a fall and forced buying into a rise can extend a move, and the next positions in line can follow. That chain is a cascade.
On 10 and 11 October 2025 more than $19B of positions were liquidated across exchanges within a day, about $10B of it on Hyperliquid, as reported at the time.
How to read the figures
Each figure is the value of the positions the exchange closed, split by the side that was forced out. Long liquidations come with a falling price, short liquidations with a rising one.
The bar runs shorts left and longs right, like every radar on the site. The line “Across Hyperliquid” adds every account, whale or not.
Limits
Times are when a read first saw the change, within minutes of the fill. A partial liquidation counts the part that was forced out. The figures across Hyperliquid count by the hour and can run some hours behind: each says up to when it counts.
What happened is no signal for what comes next. Not financial advice.
About liquidations on Hyperliquid.
- Why can WhaleRadar name the whale?
- Hyperliquid runs its order book on its own blockchain. Every fill, a forced close included, is public with the wallet, the price and a transaction hash. WhaleRadar links each liquidation of a tracked whale to that proof and to the whale’s record.
- Which wallets are the tracked whales?
- The largest and most active wallets on Hyperliquid, the same wallets as on every WhaleRadar page. Their names are given by WhaleRadar and never name a person.
- Does this page count every liquidation on Hyperliquid?
- The figures count the tracked whales, the largest and most active wallets. The line under each figure adds every account on Hyperliquid.
- Does a day of long liquidations mean the price keeps falling?
- No. It says which side was forced out, and when. What comes next depends on what is left close to liquidation and on everyone else’s orders. Next in line shows the money still close.
- How quickly does a liquidation show here?
- Within minutes of the read that sees it. Free readers see it 15 minutes after Pro. Each one gets its own page with the price around it and the proof.
- What is the difference from the liquidation map?
- This page shows what happened. The liquidation map shows where it would happen: whale positions by their liquidation price around the price now.
- Can I quote these numbers?
- Yes, with the time and a link: “Source: WhaleRadar”. Every liquidation has its own page and picture to cite.
